I think it might be because of a few reasons:

1. You might have gotton ripped off by the person who sold it to you. There are ways to 'fool' the system to show up as 512MB when it doesn't have that much memory in the first place.

2. You can try doing a "Low" format using the "MP3 Player Disk Tool" from the "MP3 Player Utilities 3.68" start up menu to see if that helps. Make sure you backup your files and the player is connected.
