If you can, take it back to who you bought it from and tell them to give you another one. He shouldn't have suggested to you to update the firmware in the first place.
To set your own radio stations, you need to just press and hold down on the [play/pause] button for a few seconds. It works for my players, u can try that.
If your player is dead, then you will have to look at this post
* here *and open up your player to recover it back again. This process takes abit of time though so if you can, get a return from the buyer.
