I us either VirtualDub http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/
Some info on using VirtualDub http://www.s1mp3.org/wiki/index.php/Video_encoding

Or PocketDivXEncoderhttp://divx.ppccool.com/page.php?pg_id=11
Some info on using PocketDiv http://www.misticriver.net/archive/i...p/t-20120.html

Both freeware

When it comes to sizing rule of thumb I reduce height to whatever it takes to remove black bands from top and bottom, divide the resulting height by 3 then multiply that by four to give me the width (eg: 200Wx150H) this gives me a 4:3 aspect ratio. I also up the volume setting between 30 to 40 % which gives better sound in finished product.

Encoding with AMV Converter I use 128x96 for size Frame Rate and Image quality high and Focus mode0 will centre the image perfectly.
Although 128x128 may give you a full screen picture, because it is square the small amount you gain in height will be lost in width as too much gets cropped off the sides.

Hope this helps
