Guest, I don't think disconnecting the battery is really necessary but you can try it if you want (some players may need the battery to be disconnected first as described in the procedures of the recovery guide at s1mp3.org)
I shorted the pins without disconnecting the battery and windows detected it just fine.
Did you just try once? Sometimes it takes a couple of runs before windows can detect it as adfu.
What kind of player do you have by the way? Do you have a backup firmware?
