Changing firmware won't make much of a difference as it seems the higher voltage might have cause some 'permanent' damage to it. But I don't want to conclude that just yet.......

Actually, you'll probably end up with a 'dead player' if you update the firmware with an incompatible firmware, so it's probably not the best thing to do right now.

Is your player still in warranty? Do you still have the contact details of the seller still??
