Backup your data to another source before formatting.

Using the Disk Tool, go to the Partition and Encrypt tab and set the slider to maximum (ie right) 1st and format. You should be able to format it and avoid the error.
Now run Disk Tool again, go to the same Partition and Encrypt tab and set the slider to minumum (ie left) and format again. Now the additional F-drive would recombine into your original drive.

But be prepared as you might not get 4GB, seems like all 4GB players are hacked memory chips. My 4GB turned out to be 2GB.
