No way are you being harsh, the no format warning is a dead give away. There is no conceivable reason why you should not be able to format the player. I say bash em'....

I quite often visit the web sites of name brand chipod manufacturers in China Like Ainol, Newman, Unibit and Degen, these are big companies that spend big money on product reseach and developement and not one of them produces a player over 2GB, so how does the crappy, no name manufacturer make 4GB and 8GB players. He doesn't. It is not until you get to the likes of Apple, Meizu, Sandisk etc that you start seeing players of this capacity at 2 to 3 times the price of chipods.
