elwynjenkins,
A few things you can try.
The USB cable may have a loose connection so try another.
Try a USB port unused before if possible.
Right click My Computer, select properties, Hardware, Device Manager, Universal Serial Bus controllers and right click on each entry and select Uninstall, then reboot and Windows will reinstall all the devices, you may need your XP install disk.
