gta3dude, it seems to me that it is like a hardware problem. Some loose connection or cracked/broken solder, as you mentioned that you need to hit a few times to turn it on.
You might want to open the player up, and visually check for any loose connections on both sides of the board, switch, keypad, everything. And if you do find it, either solder it back, or get some help from someone (eg handphone repair shops).
