This is because the firmware is for a player with a different screen type. Try loading your firmware in to Firmware Modify
HERE . It has an adjustment for contrast but normally you can only turn it up it generally only goes down one or two points which is not enough for what you need. I have seen a firmware with the same menu's as you indicated but I am having trouble finding it again. What size is your screen?
