I did manage to fix it and format it after using another computer.

The bad news was that after we took it apart and resoldered the computer connection (it was lifting up and disconnecting), the on/off switch broke off when we were putting it back together!

So now it works, but I can no longer turn it off. Have found a replacement player instead. You live and learn with these things I guess :?
