PrscillaJ , what i would suggest is to do a "LOW" level format on your player using the MP3 Utilities Disk Tool that came on the cd.
Next, extract and repair your player's firmware Here.
After this, re-flash the repaired firmware back into your player Here.

See if these steps would solve the "disk errors", and as well the battery icon.
If so, try charging for about 4-5hours, disconnect. Then let your player play music continously (you might want to set it to Repeat mode), with the earphones plugged in. A normal full-charged battery would typically last about at least 3-4hours.
