Sorry to say, what this Lorne person do is exactly what is not the purpose of this site: to give wrong information for some unknown reason.
Ogg format is proved a better format than mp3, maybe sound quality is the same... but the size of resulting file is clearly less than mp3... this is really useful for devices with low storage capacity!!
I copy here the test I do when "Ogg music" topic was opened.

Trying to reach the highest quality, I tested the same songs encoded in mp3 lame@320 versus ogg from q10 to q7.
-q10 provide a bitrate ~500 kbit/s which unfortunately was badly reproduced in my MPx device.
All the other level of quality were correctly reproduced being -q8 ~256 the one that provide better result considering quality and size of the file, resulting in a module 15% less than the size of mp3.
Definitively this is my option for ogg encoding.
