Formating the player is generally not a problem as the firmware is stored in a locked section of memory that can not be accessed. The only thing that will be deleted are the sample files on the player.
Depending on what the problem is you may find that Windows will not be able to format the player. If this is the case you may have to try the Mp3 Disk tool options as descibed above.
