Unfortunately if you lost memory due to a format, then it means your player had been 'hacked' to show more memory than the actual memory chip that is installed in your player.
This explains why you get "format errors". This is happening because you are trying to copy or access files on the 'hacked' memory section.
By formatting, it has wiped out the hack on your player and shows the true this. This should now solve the format errors as it won't try to copy or access something that wasn't there in the first place.
It's a real shame that they are hacking 1GB player too. 4Gb and 8GB players are more common but that's understandable because buying a 4GB player for about USD$60-USD$80 is too good to be true. However, hacking a 1GB is not as common.
Have you mentioned this to the seller? You should think about taking some action against them for cheating you with a hacked player though.
