You certainly have not had a good run. To start the player should always be turned on while charging, the battery can be damaged if the player is switched off while charging. Most charging problems are either battery failure or a USB connection problem.
If the player runs without problem while connected then it is drawing power in which case I would guess the battery has failed. These lithium polymer batteries deterierate with time especially when not being used. Batteries that are old stock could be 12-15 months old before you even get the player so there would be greater odds of failure.
If all 4 players are from the same supplier it may be a batch problem in which case you should get your money back and try another supplier.
