jbrat , if you had paid for insurance, you'll get a tracking number. If i'm not wrong, it will be the same EMS tracking number which you can track online with your local postal service (USPS in your case). That's the industry standard for international mail tracking.
So go to the Hong Kong post website and track your item. If it shows that it has left Hong Kong, then give it a day or two and it should appear in the USPS website tracking.
And it'll definitely go through customs, no matter which destination it is.
