chuck22 , the basic firmware versions available are the 3.5.35 and 3.5.37. So if your firmware version contains these combination of numbers, it is the Actions based player.
Regarding the memory, since it's an Actions based player, it'll only support max 2GB of memory. Anything above that is hacked and a format is highly recommended, as it will only cause alot of problems in future. The guide is

Ensure that the on/off switch button is at the on position to be able to charge or turn on.
Does it turn on only when connected to the computer?
