nervous1uk , it seems to me that the firmware you tried might be able to work. But the problem might be that your battery is dead and cannot hold its charge.
Usually for a player with wrong firmware, you'll be able to see either a blue or lighted black screen.
i'll also suggest a format on your player as there are currently no 4GB, and yours is one with hacked memory. The guide is here

After this, try the firmware again but leave the player plugged into the USB and see if it able to function normally (play mp3s and videos).
