porrmans ipod , you were lucky! The balloning was caused by over-charging the battery.

Good batteries have a built-in protection circuit to cut off the power supply when 4.3V have been reached, and as well a mechanical vent to release excess pressure when over-charged.

Well, the cheaper alternatives might have the protection circuits, but probably lower quality. And they might not have the vent, and the oxygen built up causes the balloning. Plus excessive heat is also produced. Heat + Oxygen = Fire!

I guess it'll still be quite safe, as long as you don't leave your player charging longer than it is supposed to be.
