Default Format error

I am really confused, I bought my daughter an MP$ player off Ebay, it is supposed to be a 1GB player. It is the one that is listed as a 1.8 MP4 player (has a 1.8 " screen) plays mp3 and movies, and has a built in FM radio. It is also the one that looks like an Ipod Nano except that the screen is slightly larger and the menu button has an M instead of the word menu.
Fisrt off how do I know if it is hacked to lie about actual storage size?
She loaded about 15 cd's of music some Jpgs of pictures and even a few movies we converted to amv format from her camera.

The drive showed about half full, which seemed right and since we had no trouble getting past the 1/4 full mark, 1 GByte vs 1 Gbit it seemed to be ok. Now tonight the player gives a Format Error every time we try to play a song.

Will the Remove hack procedure work on players less than 2GB?
