EART , regarding the VBR playback, i'll suggest that you re-encode those music files into a fixed bitrate like 128 or 192. As what Que mentioned, the processor probably could not cope with the VBR decoding, thus causing static noises.

I'm not really into the video playback thing, so could not help you much on that.

Generally good quality earphones produces significant better sounds than as compared with the crappy supplied earphones.
