oh yeah.. the ferrite core reminded me of an AM receiver project i did in uni. And yes, the AM receiver is totally bulky with the ferrite core.

Also, the signal drops dramatically as the receiver increases distance from the transmitting station.

You will need an extremely long antenna to receive a signal. i had an antenna about 5metres long in the project. haha..
