It was most likely a failure of the internal charge circuit or just a bad battery.
Lithium polymer batteries are charged at a precise rate - determined by the internal charger.
A properly designed LiPo charger will NOT let the battery go above 4.2 volts. If I recall correctly, damage occurs just over 4.23 volts. Usually starts by ballooning.
If you have radio control hobby shops in your area, they may be a good place to find a LiPo cell that would fit. They may also be kind enough to solder your connector on it.

its the best thing to do..but you want to bring the inflated battery to see its ratings so you can easily find a match..the battery wont explode until you will recharge it again so be sure to remove it from the battery..
