There's gotta be a way to turn it on, if everything else is working. You just gotta turn it on once, and stop trying to turn it off! Turning it off with the main power switch is not essential. I can't tell what kind of damage has been done with the needle, but perhaps you can dig the needle into the whatever is left of the sliding switch in order to turn it on. If there's nothing left of the sliding switch, perhaps lattesurf's suggestion of soldering across the contacts to create a permanent on. Whatever the solution, the decaying of a plastic switch is not going to stop me! Technically, so long as it works otherwise, the player still has a way to be turned on, even if it must be permanent. Hope you succeed at that.
