Make SURE that you use speakers which are externally powered.
It's not the battery you need to worry about, it's MP3 player's internal amplifier which will eventually get screwed if you use speakers that draw power from the player.
Most MP3 players are designed for 32 ohms earphone loads. When you connect a speaker directly, they will be 8 ohms at best (if not 4 ohms).
An 8 ohm speaker will draw 4 times more power from the player's amplifier (yes the battery too), and thus the amplifier will have to dissipate 4 times more heat - and they are not designed to do that.
If your speaker has a 4ohm impedance, it will overload the player by 8 times!!
So make sure that you use powered speakers, or feed the player's signal into an external amplifier. usually, an external amplifier or powered speaker's load to the MP3 player will be almost zero as their impedance to the MP3 player will be 10,000 ohms or higher.
good luck.
