If you extract you firmware, then you have a copy of the firmware (aka the 'brains' of the player) as a file.
If you have a support firmware version, you can then edit it, put in your own images, change the text etc then reupload back onto your player. This then gives you the opportunity the customise and theme your player's menus etc.
Also, if you have the firmware of your player, it means you can use it as a backup in case you decide to flash it with another firmware instead (would NOT recommend this).
