No. 'Upgrading firmware' will not solve your problem. If you do you will have even more problems... like a dead player.
It's quite obvious that files are corrupting on it so.. format it according to the instructions here >

Note that formatting will not remove or destroy it's operating system (firmware) as it is stored on a chip separate to the storage space.
