Default XP Prompting for USB device driver following dead player

I recently purchased an 8Gb MP3/4 player through a seller on ebay from Hong Kong.

It is one of those generic Chinese brands from Wilson.

All of the functionality was fine except for one thing. When playing any MP3 track (including the 2 supplied with the player) it would only play 10 seconds and then skip to the next track.

Tried all sorts of things to get it to work but to no avail.

Trying contacting the seller but they didn't have a grasp of the concept of support and just kept confirming that it had been despatched, eventually asking me to send it back (with no address specified).

So in essence I had myself a USB2 (slow) memory stick.

I decided that this would be ok as I had not paid a great deal of money for it and carried on using it until I switched it on today and all that I had was a white screen.

Ran through the dead player guide and after shorting one of the chips Windows Explorer showed it as an 8Gb storage media.

I attempted to flash it with some of the firmware (lsd_9101_20 9.0.50) with the supplied utilities (v3.57) but each time it would fail.

I then downloaded V4 of the MP3 player utilities and proceeded to flash the device again with one of the bin files. I was surprised to see that it was successful, so I re-booted the device.

All I got was a white screen again but this time, instead of Explorer showing it as a storage media I was presented by the found new hardware wizard for a "USB Device".

I let windows go away to try to find the driver but it just came back to say that it could not be found.

XP then continually presented me with the same wizard until I either switched the player off or cancelled the wizard.

The bin file that I used was LSD_9112_20_2006-10-21_9.0.50.BIN
(8144kb)

Anybody have any idea on how I can get XP to recognise it, even if only as a glorified memory stick ?

Thanks all
