rbluesy77 , from the orientation of the picture, it would be a 5pin Mini B socket, might be a Mini A, not very sure unless you have more pictures.

From left to right in the picture:
Pin1 - 0V
Pin2 - ID
Pin3 - Data In
Pin4 - Data Out
Pin5 - +5V

It does seem that the pins on both ends are connected, but not the middle 3. Are you able to charge the player? For data transfer, pins 3 & 4 are most important.

i'll suggest that you get the 5 pins re-soldered again.
