They could be set to 4/8/24/32-bit, depending on the graphics card. It's the same on today's gfx cards and OSes.
They didn't go for more than 32 bits of color because 32-bit is more than the human eye can detect, therefore there would only be a marginal increase in image quality if they would go to, say, 64-bit color. There are scanners which use 48-bit sensors for scanning, but the picture is still stored in 24 or 32-bit format. :P
I still use Windoze 98 for some programs, so don't argue about it with me coz i know it inside out. :lol:
Anyway... Yes, photos and videos will look a lot better on the 260k colors display.
