Not so. The different versions of AMV converter deal with resizing during conversion differently. The first version I used simply cut off the side and bottom of the screen. A different later version simply squeezes the picture up to a 4:3 ratio. In this situation I discovered the cropping / resizing options in Virtualdub could be used to attain the AR ratio I wanted.
The guide here gave info on resizing, but wasn't in-depth enough to solve this issue for me. I worked that out myself.
