The main trouble with masking tape is that it's meant to be a short-term application and to be removed as soon as the job's done.
Leave it on a while and the adhesive goes hard and is almost impossible to remove — to the extent of actually damaging the surface under it if you pull hard enough — then some time after that it will denature and fall off by itself.
I've had rolls of it become useless just sitting on the shelf.
