Unfortunately the bad news is that it seems you only have a 512MB memory chip in your player instead of a 1GB chip as advertised.
If you follow the "Removing Memory Hack" guide then what that does is removes any hacks the player has. In your case, unfortunately it seems like your player has been hacked to show 1GB when it never had 1GB and in fact only had a 512MB memory chip instead.
Did you buy it from a NZ seller? Generally not a lot of sellers hack 1GB players but more 4GB and 8GB players.
