adam_d , even with the switch at the Off position and the USB connected to the computer, the player would still show a charging screen. What happens is that the 2 data pins are connected to GND (logic '0') when the cable is connected. This the player reads as "charging mode".
When the USB is connected and switch at Off position, the player as Th3_uN1Qu3 mentioned runs off external power (ie USB power). So with external power & player reading as "charging mode", shows the charging screen. But in actual fact is not charging at all.
Leaving the player connected to the computer with the Off position for extended periods should be OK. But not when you connect it to the AC adaptor as the output current is much higher (approx 3-5 times typical USB). Which would likely fry your player.
