I cracked it open and found

I believe it was this originally http://www.mp4nation.com/products/index.php?PID=mp8272B

I used a tool called "testdisk" for linux to do advanced partition scans. When set t normal mode it shows up as an 8gig, wen in encryped only mode it showed up as a 512 meg device with FOUR, count them FOUR seprate bootable partitions, on one device??? And when in multi mode it all showed up both. So, I deleted all of the partition table information, this is the result:

encrypted only:
Disk /dev/sdg - 1049 KB / 1024 KiB - CHS 683 1 3

normal only:
Disk /dev/sdf - 8585 MB / 8188 MiB - CHS 8188 64 32

full analysis of the normal drive causes system hang, always.

The memory usage on the player reads to zero after deleting the partition table info, but the device still shows up in my partition editors as an 8 gig device instead of a 1 gig device.

What can I do to these partiions in linux (ubuntu) to get them to reflect the actual size of the disk?

after formating to fat32:
it sais I have used 1% of the dis, and thatthere is about 8 gigs left.
help?

where are linux tools for this firmware?
