_Jim_ , i think your problem happened because of the memory hack initially present in your player. There isin't any real evidence of 8GB players except for branded chinese players. So likely yours could be a 1-2GB chip hacked to show 8GB.
When you performed a delete using the player, what happens is that the player would attempt to delete everything, maybe 3-4GB or more files depending on what "stored" in it. If your player only had a 1GB chip, the excess 2-3GB would be "overwritten" on the existing 1GB area including the firmware section.
So when you deleted the files, the "3-4GB" was deleted, with it corrupting the firmware, or perhaps even deleting it.
