NEVER have to
BUY anything to use this as an MP3 player, or even video player. It will play all downloaded (illegal or not) and ripped MP3's. You never even have to turn the WiFi on if you don't want to.....in fact, just leave it off and save battery life.
I don't see any downsides. :?
