Perhaps it's Microsoft's way of marketing their players. By selling near cost with low profits, makes it very affordable and extremely competitive (maybe even cheaper) with the popular ipods or any other players. So it'll sorta generate interest and awareness amongst like-minded groups (like this thread!), people would start to get aware of it. Free publicity in a way.

i'll see of it as a marketing strategy and nothing else.

Why are clones called MP4 Players, when they don`t play .MP4 at all?
It`s like an MP3 Player which plays Music CDs only.
