purelink9 , what is the player's firmware version number? You can check this by going to the System/Settings menu, and selecting Firmware Version.

Also, what version of MP3 Utilities did you install for formatting the player?

It is extremely likely that the memory chip is corrupted due to a memory hack. Currently the wholesale prices for a legit 4GB memory chip alone is about USD$25. Considering you paid only $25, it is likely to be hacked.
