thanks for the replies. my battery wasn't dead so i don't think that was an issue. I contacted razzer001 from mp4nation and he said it's either that i wasn't doing the "safely remove hardware" option in windows or i had corrupted files on the player. i know my files weren't corrupted and i actually hadn't being safely removing it.
so i think the most likely culprit was not safely removing the player through windows. i'll be doing that from now on instead of just unplugging it.
