The thing about the firmware version is that it is not accurate. As manufacturers source cheaper components, they would modify the firmware to suit the hardware. However, they do not update the version accordingly. So there might be hundreds of variants of eg v9.1.50 firmwares, which are not compatible with each other.
The MP3 Utilities Upgrade Tool tells you that the upgrade was successful when the firmware has been fully flashed into the player. It does not tell you if the firmware was compatible or not. So you can flash a non-compatible firmware in, and it would still show you successful.
