Many thanks for the reply - negative is fine, I'd rather that I was told that it's risky to try and fix it myself before I decide that it's probably easy and break it further.
Both the firmware updater and firmware itself came from their website, for my player, so it's certainly clear that something is wrong somewhere.
I've sent them another email, slightly more angry, and hope that they reply. Otherwise I'll try and get a return or get trading standards or someone involved.
