You need something longer than normal 2.5mm plug.
I have personally found multimeter test leads to be close to ideal. Something like

except longer. If you have something with a cone-like head and it's not too small, it should work fine. Head of the button is small though so hitting it with a needle might be rather frustrating experience.
Anyway, I couldn't get the webcam to work when I tried it. Driver apparently crashed windows when launching capturing software.
Also tried a-data speedy 2gb sd with this and it works fine. SDHC card are probably not supported though. Also it seems that these access sd using usb 1.1 so it's rather slow.
BattleToads japan and usa versions hang when entering level 3. eu version doesn't but runs 1'st and 2'nd levels at reduced speed. In third level, objects are flying above ground. Haven't gotten past level 3 yet. Ps. if I remember correctly(it's been ~10 years), there should be a "teleport" in one of the walls that will get you to next level.
