To be fair to the Chinese, the big brand names often also don't update the firmware for the same reasons, and it's shut down so tight that any modding is out of the question, except with say Sandisk Sansa where they co-operated with the Rockbox community.
I for example have a Philips, 1 firmware update, my partner has a Samsung Z5, 2 firmware updates, - not exactly spectacular support!
The truth is they don't want you to hang on to your old player too long, or make it too good, they want you to the next player instead, so it's really left to us to make the best of our players we can.
