When you plug it into the USB port on your computer, it should tell you something about the player - most of the time the chipset name is displayed, sometimes the player name.

A lot of these players like the one you have are the Sunplus type. If indeed it is the Sunplus then I don't think a firmware upgrade will help with the slow NES emulation. Tje Sunplus chip just doesn't have enough bandwidth to run the NES emulator without slowing down during gameplay of certain (or most) game ROM files.

I have heard that there is a new Sunplus chip coming out that will hopefully be a good improvement over the old one.
