Default How can I write custom progs for my RK27SDK mp5 player?

I searched RK27SDK and didn't find what I was looking for. I'm new to this "mod/hack my rockchip mp3 player scene," so forgive my ignorance. But I come here with a vision of what I want to do, I just don't know how to get there. Hopefully you can help me on my journey!
Here's the scoop:
1. Bought this mp5 player from ebay, its a 16gb touchscreen vid/mp3 player:

2. I go to settings->system information and I see this:
Manufacturer: blank
Product name: RK27SDK
Major version ID: 1.2
Hardware ID: 080422

3. I want to write my own programs for this great piece of hardware.

4. When I plug it in via USB to my windows computer it shows two removable drives, one which is the root of the player where i can drag and drop things, the other which when I click on it says insert a disc.. in other words it won't let me explore it.

I'd like to do things like have a paint program, and do other cool things with the touchscreen. I also wouldn't mind re-designing the ugly and inefficient menu and GUI. The buttons are too small, I'd like to program a different operating system.

So I've stumbled upon this site and similar ones. It seems to me that changing your firmware is "all the buzz." All I want to do is be able to program this handy little device to my heart's content. So what do I need to do to start doing this. Maybe I can compile progs in c++ for it...? Do I need to change my firmware to do this? Why do people change their firmware anyways...? If it does something better than what it does currently.. sure I'd like too.

I'd appreciate if someone could clue me in on some of concerns and tell me how to begin to be able to write programs for this mp5 player.
