I had the exact same thing happen to me, had a black screen and my original firmware didn't work, even though I could access the partition.

I fixed it by using the right Rock27Boot.bin, I've got quite a collection of Rock27Boot.bin's now, I'll send them to your PM rather than upload them as they are for dead player recovery only.
