The frozen-at-hourglass symptom is common to Actions-based players in which the firmware has somehow gotten corrupted. You can find more information about these players at s1mp3.org. Unless the flash is heavily damaged, extracting and reinstalling the firmware may fix this problem. However, the newest players do not yet have tools available for this. You'll have to open up the player and read the part# of the ICs to determine what exactly your options are.
