Well, after 7 months it finally died. I had gone and purchased another portable multimedia player not too long after and gave the V2 to my younger brother. He seemed to have gotten accustomed to it.
However, the problems Astablasta described started to turn up. I was transferring some songs he wanted the other day and it died.
Never did figure out how to access the hidden partition and possibly dump the firmware.
